The 5 Goals That Resurrected Divock Origi's Liverpool Career

Updated: Nov 4, 2020

Divock Origi now enjoys cult-hero status amongst Kopites for his exploits over his time at LFC. However, there was time when his prospects weren't quite as bright. At the beginning of the 2018/19 campaign, the Belgian had just returned from a difficult loan spell at Wolfsburg, that had proceeded a promising one with Liverpool year before. His talent has never been in doubt, but it did leave Origi's career at somewhat of a crossroads heading into the Autumn. Many fans felt that like many others in the squad, the team had evolved without him since he'd been absent, and his role within the team appeared surplus to requirements.

5. Origi V Everton 90+6' 02/12/2018

Arguably the most extraordinary derby goal you will ever see. After a scuffed attempt from Van Dijk, the ball looked to be sailing onto the roof of Jordan Pickford's net. In a crazy few seconds, The England shot-stopper proceeded to help the ball onto the cross-bar allowing Divock Origi to pounce and nod the ball home from a yard out. Much to Kopites' amusement, this was the last touch of the game and more importantly, Origi's first goal since May 2017. This is arguably the most famous goal the Belgian has ever scored and you would be hard-pressed to find a  stranger goal in Premier League history. Nonetheless, this was the start of Origi's career comeback.

4. Newcastle United V Origi 86' (04/05/2019)

Liverpool's unwavering assault on the Premier League title looked set to be crumbling before them as they tried desperately to beat a resolute Newcastle side that embodied Benitez's pragmatism. The magpies twice came from behind through Christian Atsu and Salamon Rondon, thwarting Liverpool who entered the final 10 minutes like a team all out of ideas. Not on Origi's watch, as he won a crucial glancing header, and made sure the red half of merseyside would be in a title fight until the bitter end.

3. Origi V Barcelona 7' (07/05/2019)

Divock Origi made his mark on the most spectacular night Anfield has ever witnessed with a tap-in that kick started a miraculous comeback against Barcelona. This goal was the catalyst for a heroic performance, galvanising the players and fans. It was particularly important that Liverpool started fast in this game because they were without Mohammed Salah and Roberto Firmino. Many didn't give LFC a chance, clearly that didn't phase Divock Origi.

2. Origi V Barcelona 79' (07/05/2019)

Origi bagged the second goal in his famous Champions League brace from a corner taken quickly by Trent Alexander-Arnold. A sparkling contribution alongside Gini Wijnaldum's double secured the greatest comeback in Champions League history and cemented Origi's place in the LFC history books. The finish isn't as easy as he makes it look, the ball is whipped in with terrific accuracy and pace, a delightfully calm side footed finish guided the ball into the top left hand corner and took Liverpool to Madrid.

1. Origi V Tottenham Hotspur 87' (01/06/2019)

A suberb low strike won the Champions League for the Reds last June. Bringing tears of joy to the fans and adulation from the footballing world. Despite all the progression under Jurgen Klopp in his first 3-and-a-half years in charge, Liverpool were trophy-less and lacked the medals to certify this team's place in the history books. For many, this goal was so symbolic of the progression Liverpool FC have made over the past 4 years and represented a definite return to the pinnacle of world football.

Divock Origi may never usurp Roberto Firmino in the number 9 position, or quite have the prolific scoring capabilities of Liverpool's two dazzling wingers. What he has done, is create more special moments in the space of 6 months than other players will ever have the privilege of experiencing. He has made himself an embodiment of what it means to be the man for the big occasion.
